EMBROIDERY & ASSEMBLY (FACE & BEARD)
Eyes: Using black embroidery thread on a tapestry needle, embroidery the eyes over rnd 16 of the head, 5 sts wide with 6 clear sts between them (see image below). Secure and hide the tails inside the head.
Nose: Using coral pink yarn, make a double whip stitch 4 sts wide between rnds 17 & 18. Pass the yarn strand under the double whip stitch and wrap it around until the whip stitches are no longer visible. Pull on the starting tail slightly to tighten up the whip sts when finished. Do not F/O, we use the same strand of yarn to make the cheeks.
Cheeks: Using the yarn strand from the nose, embroider the cheeks either side of the face, one rnd below the eyes and to the side. Make the cheeks 1 st wide. Secure and hide the tail inside the head.
Eyebrows: Using a length of white yarn, embroider the eyebrows over rnds 12 & 13, 3 sts wide and at an angle, with 9 sts between them. Secure and hide the tail inside the head.
Beard & moustache: Attach the beard between rnd 19 & 20 of the head, central to the nose and eyes, secure the tails and hide them inside the head. Attach the moustache pieces centrally below the nose and on top of the beard at a slight angle (the closing rnd on each part of the moustache facing each other). Secure the tails and hide them inside the head.

The following pattern is for a solid colour hat. If you prefer to make the hat in stripes, alternate the colours every 2 rnds, with the first two rnds (1 & 2) in red.
Rnd 1: 6 sc into a mr (6)
Rnd 2: [1 sc, inc] x 3 (9)
Rnd 3: 9 sc (9)
Rnd 4: [2 sc, inc] x 3 (12)

Rnd 34: [17 sc, inc] x 3 (57)
Rnd 35: 57 sc (57)
Rnd 36: [18 sc, inc] x 3 (60)
Whilst working rnds 37 - 42, try the hat on the head regularly and adjust the number of rnds accordingly so the hat fits correctly.
Rnd 37 - 42 (6 rnds): 60 sc (60)
Change the yarn to white chenille yarn at the end of rnd 42. F/O the red with a long tail for attaching the hat to the head.
Rnd 43: 60 sc (60)
F/O and weave in the chenille yarn tail only (leave the red tail for attaching).
HAT POMPOM
Make a mini pompom approximately 3cm in diameter using white yarn. You can choose any preferred method to make the mini pompom, here is how I made mine.
Cut a length of yarn, long enough to secure and attach the pompom to the hat, lay it out horizontally and put it to one side.
Using the white yarn, wrap it around your index and middle finger approximately 80 times (this will give you a fuller looking pompom).
Cut the yarn tail, gently remove the yarn from your fingers and lay it on top of the length of yarn you cut earlier. Wrap and tie the yarn firmly around the centre of the yarn loops a few times. Do not trim the long tails.
Cut all the loops and then fluff and trim the pompom until you have reached the right size and fluffiness!
Attach the pompom to the hat over rnd 1. Secure the tails and hide them inside the hat.
HAT & HANGING STRING ASSEMBLY
Place the hat on the head so that it sits just above the eyebrows.
Take a length of gold string, loop it over and make a double knot at the tail ends.
Find a position for the hanging string on the hat which will enable your bauble to hang straight, and mark it.
Take off the hat and thread the looped end of the hanging string through the hat so the knotted end sits inside.
Place the hat back on the head and attach the hat in place using the red tail.
Fold and twist over the end of the hat so it sits to one side.
Congratulations!
Your Santa is now ready to hang on your Christmas tree!
